The Department of English offers two graduate degrees through four unique courses of study designed to flexibly accommodate a variety of student interests and needs.
M.A. in English Resident Program
The Department offers graduate studies leading to the Master of Arts in English with concentrations in American Literature, British Literature, Professional Writing, and Teaching, all of which prepare students for careers in teaching, writing, and a wide variety of professional fields or further graduate study leading to the doctorate. Students in the residency program study nearly entirely on campus and must complete at least 30-36 hours of graduate coursework, three of which may be thesis work.
M.A. in English Online Program
Students may pursue the Master of Arts in English through our online degree-granting program, which offers two concentrations: Literary Studies and Rhetoric and Professional Writing. Although all courses in this program may be taken online, students will have the option of taking up to 9 credit hours of UNO graduate coursework in residency, all of which will count toward completion of the 36-hour degree.
M.F.A. in Creative Writing Residency Program
The Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing, offered through the Creative Writing Workshop (CWW), allows graduate students to pursue concentrations in fiction writing, nonfiction writing, playwriting, poetry writing, and screenwriting. Students in the residency program study nearly entirely on campus and must complete 45 hours of graduate coursework, six of which may be thesis work.
M.F.A. in Creative Writing Low-Residency Program
UNO's innovative Low-Residency M.F.A. Program combines an online degree with study abroad. During the fall and spring semesters, low-res M.F.A. students participate in online creative writing workshops and literature classes, but every summer, they attend a month-long Summer Residency in Europe. Recently, students have studied in Cork, Ireland; Edinburgh, Scotland; and Ezra Pound's Brunnenburg Castle in Italy.
